From Sid A.: In MA, grandpa went to NY City for a job, but couldn't find any and had to sleep in Central Park under newspapers. Back at home, he somehow acquired a bakery business complete with horse & wagon. He later discovered the horse was blind and he had to lead the horse (this story may be confused with John, his father). His mom, Betty, lined up a girl for him to marry and he couldn't stand that, so he took off. He ended up in Minnesota where he married Lillian. When Grandpa moved to California around 1930, he left a good job and house and had a very difficult time economically. His father had to partially support him and grandma and family off and on for several years. Grandpa was very talented with his hands - painting, carving, costumes - but he never wanted to use these talents to make money.
